(A local group of the Geologists' Association)

Founded 1979

The Mole Valley Geological Society was started in 1979 by a small group of people with a common interest in the structure of the Earth. There are now about 40 members who meet each month from September to the following June when speakers have been welcomed from both the academic world and industry. Our AGM in October begins each new year.

Lectures so far have covered topics such as oil exploration, landslides, volcanoes, mining and planetary geology as well as specialised subjects such as the origin of flint, optical mineralogy and sedimentary structures. Geological aspects of our everyday life have included concrete, dams, our water supply, tunnels and also the geology of particular areas. We shall hope to repeat some of these subjects in future lecture programmes. Members themselves show slides and specimens and give short talks at the members' meetings.

MVGS is far from being an armchair society. Day trips are organised to study rocks in situ and collect fossils and minerals. A vast range of rocks from the Pre-Cambrian to the Tertiary have been studied. These outings are of great interest and also a lot of fun - provided one does not mind getting muddy! The highlight of each year is the Weekend Field Excursion. Local geology is included in pleasant walks or by car and a winter social evening completes the programme.

Visitors are welcome at the monthly meetings which take place on the second Thursday of each month from September to June inclusive, at the United Reformed Church's Follett Hall, West Street, Dorking. Time: 7.30 for 8 pm. Entrance for Guests: £2 (children under 18 and students: £1). There is ample parking space behind the Hall.

Details of the current year's programme may be found on the Society's Programme Page.
